Mix and Match Colorful Masks

4 Days



1.    Anticipatory Set:
•    Show PowerPoint—that includes information about the month, history of masks in Mexico and define terms—Hispanic.
•    Use Smart Board to show students how to use elements from other masks. Crop and paste together.

2.    Objectives/Purpose:
•    Students will learn about Hispanic culture and the history of Mexican masks by creating their “own” style of Mexican Mask using elements from historical masks.
•    Students will understand the element of form by creating at least one pop out or 3D part to their mask. 

3.    Materials:
•    Pencils
•    Paper
•    Hot Glue
•    Glue guns
•    Craft foam
•    Raffia
•    Ribbon
•    Beads
•    Feathers
•    Pipe cleaners
•    Tissue paper

4.    Standards:
a.    V.A.  1: Students recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication.
b.    V.A. 3: Students know and apply visual arts materials, tools, techniques, and processes.
c.    V.A. 4: Students relate the visual arts to various historical and cultural traditions.
d.    V.A. 5: Students analyze and evaluate the characteristics, merits, and meaning of works of art.

5.    Preparation:
    Smart board→ have images of masks in a document. Have eyes and noses and other elements cropped so that students and I can put a mask together.
    Have masks printed out and laminated to put on tables.
    Handout of different features of Mexican masks drawn, ie…noses, mouths, ears, face, or horns.

6.    Demonstration:
•    Show students how to draw and put together elements of the mask—I will do it on Smart board.
•    Show procedure—Cut shape, cut features, layer, glue.
•    Students can make mask functional (holes for eyes) or an “artifact” mask.

•    Show how to make the features 3-D. Cut tabs to glue underneath or glue objects layered.
•    Give demonstration of safe hot gluing techniques.
•    How to make accents by using two different colors and layer.

7.    Procedure:
1.    Draw a couple designs on scratch paper using examples of Mexican masks and the facial features handout.
2.    Decide on one mask and cut out face shape out of craft foam. Cut holes for eyes at this point.
3.    Then cut out the features, keeping in mind that one element needs to be 3D. Use tabs and gluing methods to make features 3D.
4.    Add embellishments—hair, sequins, beads, wire.

8.    Checking for Understanding:
At the end of the demonstration I will ask one student what the first step is, until we have gone through all the steps.

10.    Closure:
Have students clean up with 10 minutes left of class on the days they are gluing and using craft foam. Review and show works in progress.
