Spanish Heritage Month
6th Grade
4 Days
1. Anticipatory Set: I will introduce Hispanic Heritage month.
2. Objectives/Purpose:
a. Students will demonstrate knowledge of Mexican symbols and ideas by
i. Creating a tin punch artwork.
ii. Using the elements of art—line, shape, form, color, texture, space, and value.
3. Materials:
• Cut paper to the size
• Count nails and put in baggies
• Hang Lisa’s tin examples with fish line
• Library books
• Handout of examples laminated
• Handout of symbols—list steps
• PowerPoint—page with symbols, map of Mexico, Flag
• Copy pages for Papel Picados
5. Standards:
a. V.A. 3: Students know and apply visual arts materials, tools, techniques, and processes.
b. V.A. 4: Students relate the visual arts to various historical and cultural traditions.
6. Providing input (info needed to get started):
7. Procedure:
1. Draw design on 8x8” paper using Hispanic themed imagery.
2. Trace design on back of the tin, with pen or pencil.
3. Cut out shape using old scissors.
4. Create line details or texture inside the shape with pen.
5. Option: Color first then tin punch or tin punch then color using Gel FX or permanent markers.
a. Gel FX: chalky and pastel colors—can’t color over once they have dried.
b. Permanent markers: brighter, more vibrant colors.
c. Think about color, shape, line, and texture.
6. Create 2 holes to hang wires and beads.
7. Create interesting pattern with wires, ie, braid, square not, etc…
8. Hang using wire and beads.
Extra time:
Students can create Papel Picados using tissue paper.
8. Checking for Understanding:
At the end of the demonstration I will ask one student what the first step is, until we have gone through all the steps.
9. Accommodations/Modifications:
I will have handouts for the students to use as references which include Mexican symbols.
10. Closure:
a. Students will clean up and review topics we learned about including Hispanic heritage, elements of art
